4th of July

Americans celebrate life whenever they get a chance. So 4th of July was not a day filled with patriotic ferver and flag waving as I half expected. But it was a day to have fun. Head out to the favorite bar or eating place and in the night enjoy the spectacular fireworks in each city.

The fireworks in my little university town were certainly grand and fun and the place was swarming with people. It seems as if the these people need just any excuse to come out. Infact there was nothing at all to remind you that this is their independence day. Ofcourse, I am here in a liberal, east coast university town and perhaps the mood might be much more patriotic in the interiors.

But here the celebration was less of some big event in the past and more of the future. And yes like all things this was done in a big scale too.

As a resident of the midwest (Indiana) I can tell you that it is only slightly more patriotic here than on the coasts. A few more flags, a bit more boasting about how "great" our country is. Still, just as in the rest of the country, the 4th is really just an excuse to go out with friends, party and eat lots of charred flesh.
